SNAFU MAG 17 preview

Guest galore down at Snafu's Deep End over the month of May. Steve Bug starts us off this holiday weekend (Sunday) and with Gareth Sommerville appearing on Sat 10th, James Curd on the 24th and galactic cosmonaut Tom Middleton touching down on the 31st it really is shaping up for a shapes of all order.

SNAFU MAGAZINE 17 - SPECTRUM

Things are shaping us very nice for the new Snafu Mag out later this month. If you hadn't already heard we go full colour - but that's not to say we'll lose that lovely graphic based vibe you've come to love. We just really want to be able to support all local/national brands and businesses to their full potential. Hopefully people are starting to realise that although the mag is branded after Snafu, the venue, we really are here to help promote the good of Aberdeen and the North East of Scotland. Plus the odd scoop from the central belt and the UK.

Lots of lovely events upcoming at Snafu including Triptych 2008. One for the techno connesuirs is the series of Edit Select parties hosted by Percy X. Confirmed to join him in May is the rockabilly/electro/pop overlord Andrew Weatherall - for this night under a minimal spell and judging by his Fresher's week performance - boom!

Well I should really start from the beginning. Haddo House is a few miles out of Aberdeen and apart from hosting yesterday's Sport Relief Mile, set with crazed eager parents pounding round a forest trail with Hummer-sized buggies full of sprogs, there was the strange sight (you can just make them out) of a full 100yd tree-line of pet cemmetary action. At first the engraved 'proper' names of Charlotte and Stephen had us worried of who/what actually was buried beneath the mossy headstones but thankfully when we spotted Lassie's demise all was well.



Young Knives... lovely chaps, gave a spanking Snafu Magazine interview - which you'll be able to read in the upcoming issue - and played a vibrant set (with quality crowd baiting in-between tracks) that got the Moshulu crowd jumping once the relatively unknown new album stuff had made way for the hits. Unfortunately, despite great access, my band photos were abstract to say the least.





Good crowd of 'Kefugees' in for QBERT in Snafu later on. The boy Bert is quite amazing to watch. I guess that's what makes the whole thing a bit weird, not quite stale.. but atmosphere and dance-floor jossle makes way for a sea of digital cameras and phones recording the experience rather than living in the moment, man. Still, with a God like that in the flesh it's hard not to just be mesmerised.

Todd did not disappoint. A quality disco infused set on Saturday that kept the floor brimming all night, especially wih the new lasers doing the trick. Oh, and nice to see Al finding someone of his own beauty and interest to keep him occuppied in the warm -up wanderings.

Don't want to get too far ahead ourselves since Cagedbaby live, Giles Walker, Vitalic and Radioskool are on this month but there's some juicy April Mixtapians. We've got copies of Let's Go Outside's new album 'A Picnic With The Hunters' up for grabs in the latest Snafu Mag so be sure to have a looksie.

ATTENBOROUGH IN THE HOUSE

So the iconic living legend Sir David Attenborough is getting himself an honorary degree from Aberdeen Uni in June. I'm presumming from the Zoology fraternity but he's also doubling up with the film folk to be part of the Director's Cut Series, that recently featured Snafu Magazine interviewé Raul Ruiz. I'm going to keep tight lipped on how to get hold of tickets for the eagerly anticipated seminar (cos i want a ticket too!!) but expect Snafu Mag to give it's sciencetastic views in the upcoming issues.

"Sir David Attenborough's distinguished career in broadcasting spans more than 50 years. As the innovative former Controller of BBC2 and the BBC's Director of Programmes, he pioneered a new era of high quality broadcasting. An estimated 500 million people worldwide watched his 13-part series Life on Earth (1979). Presenter of popular series such as Life in the Freezer (1993), The Life of Birds (1998), and Life in the Undergrowth (2005), Attenborough has also written 17 books. In this Director's Cut, Sir David will be discussing key aspects of his career, including his latest series and book just out, Life in Cold Blood."

For anyone wishing to hear Dave DJ down at Snafu, I'm afraid we won't be selling tickets due to his guestlist featuring 2 of every animal.

MINISTERS GIVE GREEN LIGHT TO ARTS CENTRE FOR THE NORTH
Plans for a major new centre for the contemporary arts, the first of its kind in the North of Scotland, were today approved by the Scottish Government. The £12.5 million development is expected to be completed by 2010 and provide a much-needed boost to this part of Scotland's cultural provision.

Architects Brisac Gonzalez, the designers of the award-winning Museum of World Culture in Gothenburg, are delighted after receiving the green light for their first Scottish development. The plans have been praised by Architecture and Design Scotland for both the unique design and the collaborative approach taken by Peacock Visual Arts, the project leader, and by Aberdeen City Council. The innovative design places the arts centre right in the heart of the city by incorporating the development into a sunken Victorian garden and has been described as 'visionary' and 'iconic'.

A protege of the Prins Thomas and Lindstrom school of nu-disco this Oslo native has been responsible for some of the rudest remixes, edits and productions the house scene has heard in a galactagon. From his original 12"s on Full Pupp records, remixes of artists such as Lindstrom, Felix Laband, etc.to his re-edits works under the name of Tangoterje on labels such as Supreme records or G.A.M.M. , you cant go wrong with this man. Expect the latest deep, funk-drifting sounds with Terje's Aberdeen debut there'll be cosmonaught action galore. BACK TOGA FUTURE!! Sci-fi-why-fronts essential.

Is Aberdeen finally facing up to it's post oil future? The new art's centre is nearly confirmed and Donald Trump be gettin his own way? 2009 changes to the license laws plan to get the city stricter on bar + club hours of operation... social problems are menacing the streets - or is it irresponsible booze merchants feeding the problem... meanwhile the harbour is getting a facelift.. but do the council know what the funk they're doing??

Snafu Q+A for upcoming events with Peanut Butter Wolf, The Presets, Felix Kubin plus we talk to Alex Smoke about new label Hum + Haw, there's a bass lesson with L-Vis 1990 and there's Soma goodies galore with the release of Funk D'Void's 'Sc-Fi-Hi-Fi Volume 4' and Let's Go Outside's 'Picnic for Hunters'. VICTORY...

Sometimes the weekends don't really start here, especially with the fine entertainment on 6 days a week at Snafu. There's no divide.. which is good because you'd hope the weekend doesn't just slide into the self harming alcoholic overload that the local press seems hell bent on hyping into holocaustic/battleground comparisons (we know who the irresponsible sensationalists at the P+J are). Anyway the point being that there was a fresh gathering of music and people at Peacock on Saturday that made us feel that there was a cross pollination of good times, a freshness that Snafu can't bare all by itself (ok a bit of inflated ego there). Barry got all kryptonic and the white walls has us imaginging Grace Jones riding through New York in search of a dancefloor. Nice one Kit, Kenny + co.

Things are getting rather tasty in the next few months. We've managed to put together a schedule of resident showcases and very nice guests too. We'll be tweaking the Monday and Wednesday schedule slighty (more soon) and adding some Sunday shows that will be diving into the demented future as well as the historic past. These 2 shows shall be splendid. Also remember there's Peanut Butter Wolf and James Pants on Wed 19 March and it's looking like Caged Baby and his Live Experience on Friday 14 March. Oh and the much anticpated appearance of Vitalic is pretty much a sell-out.

ROLL ON ROLL OFF

Well it may not be everyone's thing by sitting down for an evening of Lloyd Webber tunage to a camped out crew of roller skaters... but after witnessing the updated action down at the In-line jam at Transition Extreme last week it was good to see the 2X2s up close for the press launch. Lovely bunch of girls in the cast too. Ahh the memories of the Louie Vega night roller-bending are streaming back.
